character sets

This page is for me to keep track of all the different types of character encodings. I just had the problem of having some curly single quotes in a file, but I'm not sure whether they're Unicode, or some Windows code page, or ISO-8859, or what. So, I'm making this page so I don't have this kind of problem in the future.
