It is a little strong. I was considering changing it to "asshats", but asshats seemed too comical; not severe enough. It didn't really capture what kind of assholes I think they are.

Read the press release, it's "Java 2 Standard Edition: Version 5.0" not "Java 5.0"

It's worrying to know that the slashdot crowd can barely read beyond a single paragraph.

I think Keith G. is right. I mean stupidly changing the name hardly merits that kind of language. Unless of course you were referencing the people who created Java in the first place.

Yes, I know it's Java 2 version 5, but right now they're at Java 2 version 1.4.2. They skipped three version numbers.
I've never seen anyone screw up version numbers so bad. First it was Java 1.0, then 1.1. Then they christened version 1.2 "Java 2", so they had Java 2 1.2, then Java 2 1.3, then Java 2 1.4 and now for whatever reason they have Java 2 5.0, which is really just Java 1.5.
If they wanted to admit they borked their version numbering and bump ahead to Java 3 I'd totally understand. But Java 2 5.0? The only way I can look at it is that they're worried about C# so they wanted to emphasize that "We've really really really improved the language. It's (Java 2) Version 5.0 man! Like wow! Stick with us!"
Whereas before we had "Ok, so it's the Java 2 platform, but the version numbers have stayed consistent (1.0,1.1...1.4)", now we have Java 1.5 being part of the "Java 2 Platform", and it's also version 5 somehow. What kind of jackasses at Sun thought this was a good idea?

Sure it's extreme language I used. But extreme version number changes call for extreme language! It's a good thing they didn't go to version 9.0, I don't know what I would have done.

I'd direct all your comments to Sun Marketing.
Remember these are the same folk that gave us the "Java Desktop System" and the MAJC (Microprocessor Architecture for Java Computing) processor. Neither of which had all that much to do with Java in the first place.
Look at JDS, when they slice LookingGlass into it it'll finally have Java Code which isn't supposed to be part of a developers suite.

Asshats. That is quite comical -- I'm gonna have to add that to my vernacular... along with "cheese eating surrender monkeys."

Keith! That's a little strong: wouldn't 'idiots' suffice?
