Yep, worked! Because _content was a Mozilla-specific frame name, I had incorrectly assumed that the sidebar would have its own specific target name I'd have to use. I hadn't considered using _self. In fact, it's been so long since I've used frames in HTML that I had mostly forgotten about targets and the special target names I just linked.
