I don't see the NYT declaring that homosexuality is ethical because it is natural. I have seen the widespread belief from some (usually very religious) people that homosexuality is wrong because it is unnatural, and this is the perfect counter-example to that assertion. There may be other reasons why homosexuality is wrong, but it being unnatural is not one of them. However, that usually tops the list when somebody is arguing against homosexuality, and it will continue to top the list unless more news articles like this are written.
